Shedding light on the invisible universe
Andrea Maccio, NYU-AD
Event Type: Special Colloquium
Time: 3:00 PM - 4:15 PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar
Abstract: We live in a dark universe, a place where the matter we know, made of electrons, protons and neutrons amounts to just few percent of total energy budget. The remnant electromagnetically silent majority is made by two unknown fluids dubbed Dark Matter and Dark Energy. Understanding their nature is the biggest puzzle in modern physics. I will present our efforts towards numerically model structure (galaxy) formation and evolution in such a dark Universe, and I will show how simulations of galaxy formation are a key tool to test and validate our current Cosmological model. I will also show how a firm understanding of the formation of the visible side of the Universe can be used to put constraints on the nature of its elusive dark components.
