From the Table-Top to the Cosmos: Searching High and Low for Dark Matter
Hongwan Liu, MIT
Event Type: Informal HEP Talk
Time: 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 902, Lg Conf
Abstract: In this talk, I will explore two recent developments in the search for dark matter. First, I will discuss how the 21-cm global signal measurement constrains the potential impact of dark matter annihilation/decay on the thermal history of the universe. I will also explain how to accurately compute such modifications to the baryon temperature in the early universe using a soon-to-be-released public code called DarkHistory. Second, I will discuss the Axion Detection with Birefringent Cavities (ADBC) experiment, which aims to observe rotations induced by axion dark matter in the polarization of light using optical interferometry techniques

New views on the Galaxy and its satellites from the Gaia space mission
Amina Helmi, Kapteyn Institute, Groningen
Event Type: Big Apple Colloquium
Time: 3:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: AMNH, TBA
Abstract: The recent 2nd data release of the Gaia mission is revolutionizing our understanding of the Milky Way and its constituents. In this talk, I will highlight a few of the first results stemming from the analysis of this truly spectacular dataset. In particular, I will focus on what we have learned about the dynamics and assembly of the Milky Way and its satellites thus far. Talk will be followed by a 3D fly-thu of the full GAIA data set using the hi-res projection system of the Hayden Theater. ************* LOCATION: Rose Center for Earth and Space, American Museum of Natural History Planetarium Entrance: 81st Street drive, between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue Alert Security Guards that you are here to attend the Big Apple Colloquium Reception and they will direct you downstairs.
