Abstract: The late David Pines was an exponent of Emergence and Complex Adaptive Matter. Bacteria, with a few billion years of evolution behind them, have evolved some fascinating ways to deal with existential problems in complex adaptive ways that only emerge under stress. I'll discuss several of these ways they handle stress, both individually and collectively, using primarily the techniques of microfabrication to pose puzzles to them. |
