Physics in a Vacuum Minisymposium, a.k.a. the Faculty Introduction Gong Show
CCPP and EPP Faculty, New York University
Event Type: CCPP Brown Bag
Time: 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar
Abstract: Starting at 11am there will be an Experimental Particle Physics lab tour. A pizza lunch at 12pm will be followed from 12:30pm to 1:30pm by a series of short introductions by the faculty in the Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics (CCPP) and Experimental Particle Physics (EPP) groups, geared towards students new to the department interested in cosmology, astrophysics, theoretical high energy physics, or experimental high energy physics. Cookies will follow from 1:30pm to 2:00pm.

ISM conditions at cosmic noon: new nebular diagnostics and mock IFU observations
Ayan Acharyya, Australian National University
Event Type: Informal Astro Talk
Time: 3:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar
Abstract: I will talk about comparing our new rest-frame UV and optical emission line diagnostics for star-forming galaxies. We apply these diagnostics, for the first time, to the brightest known lensed galaxy at cosmic noon. We infer nebular properties including the metallicity, ionization parameter, electron temperature and ISM pressure. The combination of diagnostics allows us to probe different ionization zones within the nebula. Our study demonstrates the power of rest-frame UV spectroscopic surveys when combined with these diagnostics and unprecedented sensitivity in the JWST and ELT era. However, the spatial resolution of these surveys might impact the accuracy of measuring the distribution of metals in galaxies. We produce a suite of synthetic IFU data cubes from simulations, to quantify the said effect of spatial resolution.
