Supermassive Black Holes at the Centers of Galaxies

Event Type: Astro Seminar
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:15 PM
Location: 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar
Abstract: Supermassive black holes are a fundamental component of galaxies. Residing at the centers of galaxies, these black holes have masses up to 20 billion suns and directly impact the evolution of their host galaxies. I will describe recent progress in discovering ultra-massive black holes in the ongoing MASSIVE survey of local elliptical galaxies. This new population of black holes is revising our understanding of the symbiotic relationship between black holes and galaxies, and of the gravitational wave signals from merging black hole binaries targeted by ongoing pulsar timing array experiments.
